Unequal discipline can start as early

as preschool for students of color.

Suspensions and other severe punishments hinder students’

academic progress and increase the likelihood that they will

drop out of school. One study found that nearly one in four

Black male high school dropouts is incarcerated on an average

day. And 23 percent of students who are suspended end up

in the juvenile justice system.

Police presence in schools,

unequal disciplinary practices,

and the criminalization of Black

students all contribute to the

school-to-prison pipeline and

mass incarceration.

REFLECT

What could schools do to

interrupt the school-to-prison

pipeline?
